Review: Selena Gomez - Who Says - The Video

Selena Gomez took her turn in being the one to encourage bullied or oppressed people with her new single, "Who Says". Let me just say that I am absolutely in love with the song, and I think It already has 25 Plays on my iPod.  I have always been in love with Selena's music since the Kiss & Tell era. She's supremely talented.
The song is for the haters, and the hated. She wants to make her fans (and other people) feel pretty, perfect, or the best. First, Pink with her Music Video for "Fuck*n' Perfect", Then Lady Gaga with her Video/song for "Born This Way". Now it's Selena's turn. And she did a pretty well job for making a self-empowerment song.

SYNOPSIS:

The song starts with a facial shot of Selena wearing a large pair of round earrings, a black dress, and.. Make up. (trust me, make up is an important element of this video.) With closed eyes, Selena slowly opens them saying the first lines of the song. Then the intro begins. Shots of her posing, and the first verse starts.

The first verse starts with Selena, saying the lines, With a hand on her hips and looking insecure. As the camera zooms out, it is revealed she is on a photoshoot session. And she is uncomfortable of it. she then removes her heels, removes her large earrings, throws them away, and then walks through the streets barefoot, carrying her sparkly pair of heels. As she is singing the bridge, shots of the lyrics are shown like "Nanananannanananana" and "Beauty Queen" posted along the stores and theatres. And while Selena is singing, she looks at a sign saying "Every Right". Signalling the chorus.

The chorus starts with Selena, singing with a backdrop of an ad or mural saying "Beautiful The Original Since '92". The chorus is mostly performance and quotations. Throughout the chorus, the video spells out the following sentence: "Don't Judge a Book By Its Cover". As the chorus ends, she hops in on a cab, then the 2nd Verse Begins.

The 2nd verse starts with Selena singing inside the cab and turning her head to read signs and sayings along the way, such as "Beautiful Life", "The Beautiful Hotel", "9.30 Art", "The Stars", "Touch The Sky". As the bridge begins, she is walking through a walkway, and she sees signs like "Beautiful Me" on the sky, and "You've got Every right". Then the Chorus Starts.

The chorus begins with Selena, singing again in front of a big mural that says "That's the price of Beauty (213)-555-0100" and shots of sayings and phrases again that say "True Beauty Lies Beneath the Surface" The 2nd Chorus is mostly on performance.

The breakdown starts with Selena walking into a restroom, Removing the clips and binders that fix her hair. Then she removes her black dress, coming out wearing only a Loose Sleeveless shirt, and  Short-Shorts. Then she is shown removing her makeup while singing the lyrics. (I told you its an important element. For me it symbolizes that beauty exists beneath the mask of vanity.) She is now shown in the mirror, Looking plain and Makeup-less. Then runs out.

The final chorus starts with Selena, walking to a beach, soon to find, her adoring fans and band, waiting for her. Shots of the fans hugging her are shown, Shots of her performing with the band are shown, and the final shot is Selena running from the shore to the water with her fans and having fun. The final shot shows "The End" written on sand, then it washes way. Then fade to black.
OVERALL RATING: 5 Stars

The Video is just absolutely lovely. Listening to the song, then watching the video just makes me love it even more. This is truly self empowerment. I think music may take its turn in encouraging individuals to be themselves and to love themselves. Selena Gomez has a farther way to go even though her Wizards  show is near its end. She has choices. Music and acting.

I gotta say, your blog is one pretty fantastic looking setup. It's a cute customization with all the fonts, the background and the overall feel to it. How did you do it. As for Selena's Who Says single, I agree with your review. Its definitely a catchy beat with a great message that should be listed amongst the great songs about self empowerment, individuality and acceptance of uniqueness. The video is nice and is just as viewer friendly as her other videos. Kudos for the review!! Favorite line of the song: Who says you're not presidential?
